Torque series

Ones proximity to a sculpture can shift visual coherence. From a distance the painted rods that form the endless foundation of the grid in Hexagonal Structure appear torqued, or bent, in Torque (latón 04) (2022). Visual moiré patterns create an illusion of movement as 100 of the vertical yet diagonally positioned rods of the same size meet at varying heights in a dome shape. The appearance of movement is aided by the division of each rod, and thus the sculpture, in half through the artist’s painting of half of a face of the four-sided rods in either white, gold, black, or coper. At each vantage point, two opposing colors are visible at the same time, and akin to Hexagonal Structure, additional colors form optically at that same perspective. The lines of colors intersect visually as they torque, but never touch, an effect that cites Gego’s spherical sculptures from the 1960s. The impression of malleability formed by positioning the rods at varying angles together with Kronschlaeger’s experimentation with color, produces a disorderly visual crisscross of swirling lines and colors. The integrity of a line, its straightness, is at stake.
