Schlögener Lichtbrücke
Project proposal 1994In Upper Austria, the Danube carves a deep S-curve in the hills of the Bohemian Plate, flowing southeast, thennorthwest and back again. The serpentine curve is known as the Schloegener SchlingeA wire cable(10 000 feet) spans all three valleys. 25 sails are attached to the cable in each river valley. Graniteblocks, each weighing about 550 pound, are suspended from various lengths of steel cables connected to the sails. They prevent the wind from twisting the sails and form an oscillating bridge over each river valley. From thedistance, the seemingly floating granite arches resemble viaducts, a reference to the fact that the Danube was oncethe border between the Roman Empire and the Teutonic civilization and the demarcation line between the Americanand Russian zones occupied in WWII.
